Here in the Midwest, we know winter. (Like, we really, REALLY know winter. Team Northbound’s headquarters got hit with nearly 2 feet of snow last week. We’re still trying to thaw out!)

“Write about what you know” is age-old advice, so we thought why not put together a style guide full of winter engagement photo ideas! We’ve included outfit inspiration for him and her, along with some fun accessory ideas, too. (Because trust us: after spending years in this wintery wonderland we call “Minnesnowta,” we know a thing or two about staying stylish in low temps.)
The best news? All of these things can be used all winter long, plus they make great holiday gifts!
Let’s dive right into our style guide!

Winter Style Guide
Outfit ideas for her:

Fleece Lined Knitted Pom Pom Hat
A warm fleece lined hat is TOTALLY a must-have. We love the fun puff ball, but if you don’t, it’s removable!

Oversized Fuzzy Jacket
A big fluffy jacket is one of our winter staples this year. This one is super affordable (which is why we’re stocking up on a few different colors!)

Taupe Timberland Courmayeur Valley Boots
The technical color of these boots is “taupe,” but they look pink to us! And we think every girl needs a pair of pink boots in her life.

Metallic Silver Gloves
These cute grey gloves have metallic thread woven through them for a bit of sparkle.

Levi’s Sherpa Trucker Jacket
There’s nothing more classic than a Levi’s Trucker jacket! We love this unique color, but it also comes in standard wash denim.

Warm Wool Socks
If you’re like us, you need more wool socks in your life. These are cute and affordable (and they come in a nice gift box, too!).

Sorel Joan of Arctic Boots
Sorel boots are a winter staple for us, and the Joan of Arctic style is just so stylish!

Free People Fairisle Thermal
The fairisle pattern detailing on this henley shirt is sweet and subtle.

Chunky Knit Pullover Sweater
A cozy knit sweater? Yes please. These gorgeous green color reminds of us of a Christmas tree!

Knit Rust Infinity Scarf
A scarf can dress up any outfit, and we love one in a bold neutral like this one.

Red Wine Maxi Skirt
You know what color really pops against a backdrop blanketed in fresh snow? Red! This skirt would make such a statement in a winter photo session!

Plaid Poncho
A ruana is a versatile fall & winter piece. It looks great with jeans or a skirt!
Outfit ideas for HIM:

Plaid & Faux Fur Trapper Hat
Is there anything more winter than a bomber hat like this one? We don’t think so.

Carhartt Jacket
A great everyday jacket, plus it looks great, too! You just can’t go wrong.

Plaid Shirt
We love the colors in this classic button-up plaid shirt. It comes in a bunch of other colors, too, as well as solid rather than patterned.

Waterproof Boots
It’s really hard to find winter shoes/boots that look good. We think these fit the bill, and we like how they aren’t too clunky, either!

Thermal Underwear
Not everyone loves the quality of these Fruit Of The Loom long underwears, but we think for the price, they do the trick!

Fairisle Sweater
We can’t get enough of fairisle. A little bit preppy, a little bit rustic…and totally perfect.

Buffalo Check Scarf
Buffalo check = the ultimate winter pattern. You just can’t go wrong with it!

Fleece Quarter-Zip Sweater
A fall and winter staple, this sweater has an extra layer of fleece at the back to help lock in the warmth.

Carhartt Beanie
This hat comes in just about any color you can dream of. This balsam green one is our pick!

Wool Socks
These wool socks will keep your feet warm, and we love the colors and design!

Grey Gloves
It’s hard to find gloves that look good AND actually keep your fingers warm, but these thick ones have great reviews!

Levi’s Corduroy Sherpa Jacket
In the women’s section of our guide, we have a similar Levi’s jacket. We just really love this classic style!

Pendleton Sweater
Fans of The Big Lebowski should recognize this sweater! This style debuted in 1972. Beautiful.
MISC. ITEMS FOR A WINTER ENGAGEMENT PHOTO SESSION:

Classic Winter Sled
This classic steel and wood sled would make a great photo prop. It also will make you go down a hill really fast if you dare to slide on it!

HotHands Hand Warmers
These are a winter must-have. We’re linking the 40 pair, bulk pack here because you will definitely use lots of them!

Pendleton Plaid Blanket
We are just crazy for Pendleton plaid around here, and there’s nothing cozier than cuddling up with a warm blanket during the winter!

Alaskan Snowshoes
Beautiful AND functional…we’re all about these classic snowshoes!

Reindeer Antlers Headband
This is probably the least stylish item in our guide, but it may just be the most fun!
